Six people died in separate road accidents yesterday just hours before the garda bank holiday road safety operation was due to come into force.

The victims included an eight-year-old boy who was struck by a lorry in Co Roscommon and a 12-year-old boy who was knocked off his bicycle by a lorry in Co Longford.
