Brennan seeks to extend penalty points system
The Minister for Transport, Seamus Brennan, is set to announce that he plans to pursue quickly an extension to the penalty points system.
Mr Brennan is due to hold a press conference later today with the Assistant Garda Commissioner Tony Hickey and the chairman of the National Safety Council Eddie Shaw.
Mr Brennan is to address enforcement of the penalty points system as well as motor insurance implications.
A department of transport spokesman said the minister hopes to have an extension of the penalty points system in place by the summer.
However, the association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors have passed a motion calling for a suspension of any further introduction of penalty points.
Gardai are unhappy with plans to extend the system without the proper computer facilities being installed in all garda stations.
The executive of the AGSI plans to meet the minister to discuss the measure.
