MEP Roche welcomes Hungary vote for EU

The Minister of State for Europe Dick Roche has said that Hungary's yes vote in their referendum on joining the EU is an historic step to enlargement.

The country's government praised the success of the vote.

Close to 84% of the electorate voted in favour of EU membership.

Hungary can now join the 15 member states in May 2004.

During that term Ireland will be holding the presidency.
