Murdered businessman buried - three years later

A businessman who was bludgeoned to death at his home in Northern Ireland was finally buried today – nearly three years after his death.

Gerry McGinley’s wife Julie and her lover Michael Monaghan are serving life sentences for hatching an evil plot to dispose of the father of two.

Mr McGinley, 34, was killed as he slept in his house near Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, and his body was smuggled across the border in August 2000.

His remains were found in woodlands in Co Leitrim 10 months after he disappeared.

But it was only after the murderers were sentenced last month that his family could plan the funeral.

Hundreds of mourners attended the ceremony today at St Clare’s Church in Manorhamilton, near where Mr McGinley’s remains were discovered.

Canon Michael Cooke praised his parents for showing no bitterness towards the killers.

He said: “You have been very strong over these last few years, strong in your support for one another and strong in your determination to see that the truth came out and justice was done.

“Your dignity and composure have been truly remarkable in all of this time.”
