Four police officers were injured in west Belfast today when their Landrover was hit head-on by a car driving on the wrong side of the road.

Three men were arrested after the crash happened, in an area blighted by joyriding.

The police vehicle was travelling along the Monagh by-pass at 3.30am when a blue Ford Escort travelling in the opposite direction mounted a footpath before colliding with it.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokeswoman said the car was then driven off.

She added: "A short time later three men were arrested in the offending vehicle, which had struck a set of traffic lights on the Grosvenor Road."

It is believed the officers' injuries were not serious.

Police were unable to confirm if the Escort was stolen.
