Survey shows 76% of smokers want to quit

Seventy-six per cent of Irish smokers want to give up the habit, according to a survey commissioned by the Office of Tobacco Control.

The research, carried out by the MRBI, also found that 64% of smokers have attempted to quit at some stage.

MRBI spokesman Damian Loscher said the desire to quit applied across all age groups.

He also said the perception of smokers only wanting to give up as they grew older was a myth, with 69% of smokers in the 18-24 age group saying they had tried to quit and 79% saying they wanted to.
