Government plans to introduce legislation that will force publicans to check national ID cards for 18 to 25-year-olds will not work, according to the National Youth Council.

Colm O'Mongain of the Youth Council says that the law already requires publicans to seek proof of age from anyone they think is under the age of 18.

Mr O'Mongain insists that the issue is actually a question of enforcement of the regulation that is already in place.

According to the National Youth Council, Minister McDowell's proposal is only reiterating what is already in legislation.
