Iarnród Eireann has confirmed to The Sunday Tribune that new parking charges, which could cost up to 50 cent an hour, will be introduced in Booterstown, Clontarf Road and Malahide DART stations this summer as part of a pilot project.

A company spokesman fsaid similar plans were shelved last year but are now being revisited because of the high numbers of non-commuters parking at DART stations.

He added that the parking fee for DART users would be "heavily-discounted", but non-discounted prices would be at least 50 cent an hour, which is in line with local authority parking fees in those areas.

Transport Minister Seamus Brennan has criticised the proposals as a disincentive to use public transport.
