Garda car chase 'prevented gangland murder'

Gardai believe they may have prevented a gangland murder after a car chase led to the arrest of two men yesterday.

The incident is thought to be linked to a feud that has already claimed the lives of five people in south Dublin, gardai said.

An unmarked police patrol car was rammed just before midnight on Saturday by a car which officers had been following.

Shots were then fired at the Garda car, hitting it several times. Nobody was injured in the incident, which happened in the Inchicore area.

Officers later found the vehicle they had been following abandoned on Bluebell Road and a pump action shotgun nearby.

An 18-year-old and a 22-year-old arrested by officers were today being questioned.

Gardai said they were also looking for two other men in connection with the incident.
