World Airways suspends military flights through Shannon

World Airways has announced plans to indefinitely suspend its use of Shannon Airport to transport US soldiers to the Middle East.

The civilian airline, which has a major contract with the US military, has told Aer Rianta that it will not be bringing US troops through Shannon for the immediate future.

World Airways said it intends to re-route all its military flights through Frankfurt in Germany.

It said the reason for the move was the lack of work for the company's maintenance staff in Germany and not growing opposition in Ireland to the use of Shannon as a pit-stop for the US military.
