The number of foreign visitors to Ireland rose by 1.6% in the first nine months of last year compared to the same period in 2001, according to figures released today by the Central Statistics Office.

More than 4.5 million tourists stayed for at least one night in Ireland during the nine-month period and spent €3.15bn.
