Extra gardaí and Army back-up are to be deployed at Shannon Airport to tackle the security threat at the airportp.

Garda Commissioner Pat Byrne held a special meeting today with senior Garda officers and Aer Rianta officials.

Coupled with this, the Commissioner had discussions with the Defence Forces Chief of Staff and has requested military support as a backup to the gardaí.

Discussions are now to take place between gardaí and Army officials on how this should be put into action.
