Safety council reports halving of road death rate

The National Safety Council has reported a significant reduction in road fatalities during the first month of this year.

A total of 19 people have died in road accidents so far in January, compared to 35 during the same month last year.

The introduction of a penalty points system for speeding motorists late last year is believed to have contributed to the reduction.
