Fine Gael Senator Sheila Terry has called on the Government to introduce a year-round "Operation Freeflow" to be managed by a dedicated Garda Traffic Corps.

"Operation Freeflow was a real success over the Christmas and New Year period. Ten years ago, traffic in Dublin was a nightmare at Christmas but not so bad during the rest of the year. Today, traffic is a nightmare all year round and actually improves at Christmas," she said.

"Surely the solution is simple. Namely, the creation of a dedicated Garda Traffic Corps within the force, thus allowing traffic to flow smoothly and gardaí to concentrate on fighting crime," she added.
