L-plate motorists applying to do their driving test may have to wait from between 10 weeks to six months to sit the exam because of a civil service recruitment ban on examiners and an avalanche of applications.

Official Government figures released last night reveal that in the last month, those applying to sit the test have soared from 50,000 to 97,000, all of whom face waiting times of weeks to months.
