The wife of convicted garda killer Pearse McCauley says she regrets any hurt their wedding caused to the widow of garda Jerry McCabe.

Sinn Fein councillor Pauline Tully and Mr McCauley tied the knot at a ceremony in her home town of Kilnaleck in Co Cavan at the weekend.

Mr McCauley received a temporary release from Castlerea open prison, where he is serving 14 years for his part in the manslaughter of garda Jerry McCabe.

A spokesman for garda McCabe's widow Ann says she was devastated that her husband's killer was being released from custody for the wedding.

Speaking exclusively to Shannonside-Northernsound Radio, Pauline McCauley says they regret any hurt Mrs McCabe felt.

"When Pearse and I were planning this wedding it was a small quiet wedding. We did not want the media attention," she said.

"I think the media attention brought by the tabloids brought it to her attention and brought her hurt and annoyance again.

"I can only imagine what she feels having lost her partner in life and I have to feel sorry for her. We did not intend to cause her additional grief or hurt by getting married."
