Walker rescued after mountain accident

A female walker was rescued from a Galway mountainside early this morning after she broke an ankle while hill walking.

The woman and 10 others, including six children, were at the summit of Beenchoona mountain close to Leenane where she suffered the injury.

Mayo and Galway mountain rescue teams were alerted and evacuated the other walkers from the area.

The woman was brought by rescue workers by stretcher down the mountain and arrived at the base before 2am.
