Irish fishermen continue blockade off south-west coast

Irish fishermen off the south-west coast are continuing blockades against foreign fishing vessels.

New fishing regulations on access to the Irish Box agreed to by EU fisheries ministers came into affect today. It effectively means there is open access to these waters.

Three fishermen's organisations are involved in the protests and they say they will continue until tomorrow's meeting with the Minister for the Marine, Dermot Ahern.

Chief Executive of the Killybeg's fishermen's organisation, Sean O'Donaghue, says the long standing agreement that only 40 Spanish fishing vessels enter these waters should remain.
