Victims withdraw demands for Archbishop to step down

The Catholic Archbishop of Dublin has won a reprieve from calls for him to step down.

Two prominent victims of paedophile priests have withdrawn their demands for his resignation after Cardinal Desmond Connell promised to open all church files to the gardai.

Marie Collins and Ken Reilly will also be given a say in devising abuse prevention measures in the future.

Mr Collins says a substantial amount has been agreed with the church.

"We have gone into specifics of what is going to happen and how we are going to be involved.

"It is not just a PR exercise to keep everybody happy for the moment and if things don't happen as we have been told they will we will certainly be saying so."
