Residents warn further deaths 'waiting to happen'

Monaghan residents say another baby will die if proper hospital services are not restored in the county immediately.

Monaghan residents say another baby will die if proper hospital services are not restored in the county immediately.

The stark warning comes after a premature baby died when her mother was forced to travel to Cavan, because the maternity unit in Monaghan General hospital was closed.

The Department of Health has ordered an inquiry. Peadar McMahon of the County Monaghan hospital Alliance Group says this infant girl must not be allowed to die in vain.

He is insisting that their protest for services to be restored will continue. "We have been striving, every avenue we could find we were using to try to persuade the people to provide the services required."
