Dublin lift dispute may spread nationwide

There are fears that the lift-servicing dispute in Ballymun could become nationwide.

The Technical, Engineering and Electrical Union said plans by the Pickering Lifts company to bring in "strike-breakers" and bodyguards to end the month long dispute in Ballymun, are Dickensian.

The TEEU said the only option open to it is to call on other members around the country to picket in sympathy.

TEEU spokesperson Arthur Hall, said any attempt to bring in strike-breakers will have a negative effect on the situation.

He said: "This is a real throwback to the last century. The reaction of the members themselves and the members of other lift companies might be a negative reaction and it could lead to mass picketing at Ballymun and other sites."
