Abuse victims' compensation scheme begins

A compensation scheme set up to deal with victims of institutional abuse has begun processing claims this morning.

A compensation scheme set up to deal with victims of institutional abuse has begun processing claims this morning.

As many as 8,000 people who have alleged abuse in industrial schools, reformatories and other institutions are expected to apply to the Residential Institutions Redress Board for compensation.

Costs for the scheme could amount to around €400m, with Catholic religious orders contributing one third of the money.
