There has been a call for Gardai to operate in nationalist areas north of the border.

The call was made by Fianna Fail TD Seamus Kirk at the British-Irish inter-parliamentary body meeting in Manchester.

Mr Kirk said Gardai would enjoy the support and confidence of nationalists.

"I know myself that there are areas in the North where it will take a long time to build up confidence in the PSNI and I believe that the prospect of garda involvement in those areas, where there would be absolute confidence in gardai south of the border, I believe there will be an acceptance of them," he said.
