Paedophile cleric released from jail today

A paedophile cleric who sexually abused boys in the 1950s and 60s at a Cork home is due to be freed from prison later today.

Brother Ambrose (76), otherwise known as James Kelly, was jailed for 36 years in 1999 after he pleaded guilty to 18 sample counts of abusing children in Lota in Cork.

However, in Cork Circuit Criminal Court last week, Judge Patrick Moran decided to place Brother Ambrose in an institution for the rest of his life because of his ill health and his age. The name of the institution will not be released.

The Judge's decision caused outrage amongst his victims, who said the justice system had let them down.

A number of the victims said that Brother Ambrose had imposed life sentences on them and yet he was walking free after just three years.

Today he begins his new life in the unnamed institution, which is being paid for by the Brothers of Charity.
