The Irish Anti-War Movement has denounced the escalation of military troops and weapons on the Iraqi border.

The group condemned the action as "tantamount to a US declaration of war".

The IAWM called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Brian Cowen to condemn the US action and to use Ireland's position on the UN Security Council to call for an urgent withdrawal of US troops in the region.

"He is now obliged to call attention to the hypocritical actions of the US and call a halt to this war mongering," said a spokesman for the Irish Anti War Movement.
