Irishwoman speaks after Jenin shooting

A 23-year-old Irish woman has been shot and injured in the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank today.

Caoimhe Butterly, a member of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign, which carries out charity work in the occupied territories, was shot in the leg and is recovering in hospital.

Ms Butterly was also injured in previous violence in the region in August. Speaking from her hospital bed this afternoon, Ms Butterly said she was shot during clashes between Israeli soldiers and stone-throwing youths.

"I [was trying] to negotiate with the soldiers because they were shooting at kids, they were basically shooting live ammunition at them, and I started engaging in some negotiation with one soldier and then another tank drove up, the guy looked out of his hatch and he opened fire on a crowd of kids," she said.

"Most of them managed to run away, but there were around three small ones left on the road, so I was trying to basically carry them into an alleyway and then I got shot myself."

A senior UN official was also shot and killed in a separate incident in Jenin this morning.
