Reports from Jenin say an Irish peace activist may have been shot during an exchange of fire which killed a British UN official.

The reports say an Irish peace activist was shot in the leg in the attack, which killed 50-year-old Ian Hook, 50 who headed a UN project to rebuild homes in the battle-scarred camp.

It's believed the Irish woman may have been with Mr Hook when he was killed by gunfire, thought to have come from Israeli troops.

A Department of Foreign Affairs official said today Irish embassy officials in the area were trying to confirm the reports.
