Two Green Party TDs have chained themselves to trees on Dublin's O'Connell St to protest at the city council's plans to cut down all the trees on the street.

The London Planes, some of which are more than 100 years old, are due to be destroyed and replaced by other species as part of the redevelopment of O'Connell Street.

Green Party TD Eamon Ryan said he believes the city council could find a way to save the trees, which many view as an important characteristic of Dublin's main thoroughfare.
