Trimble claims paramilitaries are the only problem

UUP leader David Trimble has said his party will not re-enter government in the North unless the IRA completely halts all paramilitary activity.

Mr Trimble also suggested that paramilitarism is the only problem in the Irish peace process, despite republican and nationalist concerns about policing, demilitarisation, human rights and justice.

"The only problem is paramilitaries," he said. "There is no other issue."

Mr Trimble also declined to answer questions today on how long a period without paramilitary activity would be necessary to get unionists back into the power-sharing Executive.
