Trimble selected to contest Assembly elections

Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble was last night selected to contest the next Assembly elections in his Upper Bann constituency.

Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble was last night selected to contest the next Assembly elections in his Upper Bann constituency.

However, Mr Trimble failed to top the poll, with his colleague, George Savage, securing more votes.

The Assembly elections are due to take place in May next year, but they have been surrounded by uncertainty since the British government suspended the North's political institutions for the fourth time in as many years.
