Penalty points system comes into force today

The controversial penalty points system for motorists comes into effect today, with speeding the only offence covered by the scheme.

In future, any motorist caught breaking the speed limit will face a fine of €80 and have two points issued against their licence. If this is challenged in court, the fine could rise to €800, with four points issued against the licence.
