Police attacked after finding suspect device

The police and army were attacked with petrol bombs and other missiles tonight as they attended a bomb alert in Derry.

A police spokeswoman said up to 60 youths launched a “sustained attack” in the City’s Nationalist Bogside area.

“Petrol bombs, fireworks, bricks and bottles were thrown in the area of Rossville Street and the surrounding area of Fahan Street,” she said.

“Damage has been caused to police vehicles but at this stage there are no reports of any injuries.”

Fahan Street was sealed off at Butcher’s Gate when a suspect package was discovered earlier in the evening.
