Fine Gael's Enterprise, Trade and Employment spokesman, Phil Hogan TD has hit out at the Government for rampant cost increases in the economy.

Deputy Hogan said the announcement of the loss of 620 jobs in IFI is another example of how competitiveness issues are now dominating the employment agenda.

"This is a further indication that the Government did not intervene early enough to minimize the job losses and of the Tanaiste's obvious failure to convince anybody that part of the company, at least, could survive," said Deputy Hogan..

"The 620 job losses caused by the closure of the IFI plants in Cobh, Arklow and Belfast is devastating news and it is now imperative that every effort is made to provide replacement jobs for Cobh and Arklow as soon as possible."
