The North of Ireland is tonight facing the possibility of a return to direct rule from London, with the British government reportedly preparing to suspend the Northern Assembly and Executive.

Sources in the British government said today that Mr Blair is actively considering appointing extra ministers from London to take over the running of Stormont’s Executive departments.
