Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams has said he wants to see the total disbandment of the IRA, but does not believe that this will happen within the next few days, as demanded by hardline unionists.

Speaking in Belfast, Mr Adams accused UUP leader David Trimble of creating the current crisis by threatening to resign in January unless the IRA had proven its commitment to disarm.
