The National Union of Journalists is giving a cautious welcome to reports that the Minister for Justice Michael McDowell is setting up an expert group to examine possible changes to the libel laws.

However, the union is expressing concern that the Government is exploring the possibility of State regulation of newspapers.

The NUJ hopes any report issued by the expert group is acted upon swiftly.
