Unions: wage increase still too low

The National Minimum Wage is due to increase tomorrow from €5.71 per hour to €6.35.

This is the second increase since the wage was introduced in April 2000.

However, it is the last increase under the current national pay deal.

Union leaders have welcomed the increase but insist that low paid workers deserve more.

The ICTU’s Oliver Donoghue maintains the wage level should be linked to inflation.

He says it is a good foundation to build on but more needs to be done.

The ICTU representative argues that a €7 minimum wage would be reasonable.
