More than 7,000 smoking-related deaths in 2000

More than 7,000 people died from smoking-related illnesses in the year 2000, according to figures released by the Office of Tobacco Control today.

The figures showed that Irish people spent €1.9bn on tobacco in 2000 and that most smokers started the habit as teenagers.
