Campaign launched to clear former soldier’s name

Actor Gabriel Byrne is to launch a US campaign to pressure the Irish Government to reveal the truth behind the expulsion of Donal de Roiste from the Irish army in 1969.

Mr de Roiste was “retired” from the army by then President Eamon de Valera, apparently after he refused to lie to save a senior officer who almost killed a civilian in a drink-driving incident.
