SIPTU warns against rail cutbacks

SIPTU has warned Iarnród Eireann against cutting back on services.

The union has made the warning following rumours that the company's service could be cut back.

Slamming such an idea, Tony Tobin, secretary of SIPTU's rail services division, said while Irish Rail's financial situation was a matter of concern, it would be the "height of folly" to start cutting back on services in the wake of a major investment scheme in the rail network. He argued that such proposals would "vehemently opposed by SIPTU".

SIPTU's worry comes after rumours that some services were to close.

SIPTU have warned against any simplistic solutions to the company's problems, citing that Irish rail is forecast already to make a €25m budget deficit this year.
