Guinness Ireland has announced it is to plough €38m in to its breweries in Dundalk and Waterford.

Enterprise Ireland has voiced its support for the move and the Tánaiste said she was pleased with the development and that the investment in production facilities and new technology was required to meet the increasing demand for the special ingredients used to brew Guinness.

The Waterford brewery is to be converted to a production facility costing around €34m - while an additional €4m will be invested in the Dundalk plant.

Minister for Trade, Enterprise and Employment Mary Harney said the expansion would underpin the long-term viability of brewing in the city.

No new permanent jobs will be provided as a result of these investments.
