Cowen calls for African development support
Minister for Foreign Affairs Brian Cowen is calling on the international community to support African development as he addresses the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) this evening.
NEPAD has been established to foster political and economic development in Africa.
Mr Cowen said the development of strong political bonds and the growth of democratic governance were crucial.
He added NEPAD was a journey much like that undertaken by the EU 30 years ago.
But he said, creativity and economic growth were essential components of this structural-political development.
And Mr Cowen added that Ireland feels the international community must play a strong and visible role in the continent's growth.
