A reduction in the number of houses built in Ireland this year is expected to cost the Government €100m in taxes. Meanwhile, house hunters will find it more difficult to buy their own homes.

Construction industry sources estimate that the Government’s tax-take on a new house accounts for more than a quarter of the cost. That is €37,500 on a €150,000 home.
