Harney denies rift with Ahern

The Tanaiste, Mary Harney, has denied claims that her relationship with the Taoiseach has been damaged by the Stadium Ireland fiasco.

Earlier this week, the cabinet refused to provide funding for the stadium because of opposition from Ms Harney’s Progressive Democrats.

Speaking today, the Tanaiste said the matter has not damaged the Government.

“There were other priorities I believe that the money should be used on, but I believe the Government will not be damaged,” she said.

“Certainly, there are tensions from time to time between parties in Government, between the bigger party and the smaller party. It’s always a question of give and take.”
