Loyalists in north Belfast threw missiles at police from the top of a 13-storey block of flats last night after officers moved to arrest a local woman.

The violence took place in the Mount Vernon area, a UVF stronghold, after police arrested the woman in connection with the seizure of a quantity of ammunition during a search operation.

Bomb disposal experts also had to deal with what they said were two unstable explosive devices in the area.

Calm was eventually restored following talks between police and PUP Assemblyman Billy Hutchinson, who said the trouble could have been avoided if officers had not used heavy-handed tactics.
