Youth Council calls for Saturday vote
The National Youth Council has called for the forthcoming re-run of the Nice Treaty referendum to be held on a Saturday to maximise voter turnout.
The organisation said a weekend vote would facilitate thousands of people living, working and studying away from their home constituencies.
The majority of EU member states hold referenda on weekends.
National Youth Council spokesman Colm O’Mongain said the last south Tipperary by-election also showed an increased turnout when it was held on a Saturday.
