FG slams Taoiseach’s ‘callous PR stunt’

Fine Gael has dismissed the Taoiseach’s speech to the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg today as "a callous PR stunt".

Party spokesman Gay Mitchell said Bertie Ahern’s pledge to meet UN aid targets appears hypocritical following his Government’s recent decision to cut more than €40m from the overseas aid budget.

He said Mr Ahern’s comments are not in line with the Government’s actions and has called for legislation to fix minimum levels for Irish aid.
