There was renewed violence in Northern Ireland overnight with petrol bombs thrown at houses in west Belfast.

One of the houses on the mainly unionist Glenbrin Park Estate caught fire during the attacks.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokesman said that the petrol bombs were thrown from the republican Alliance Avenue. No one was injured in the attacks.

In a separate attack, a man wearing a balaclava unsuccessfully tried to shoot two men in Coleraine.

Police said the attack bore all the hallmarks of a sectarian murder bid.
