New regulations that require taxi drivers to issue receipts to customers are to be phased in from today.

The Minister for Transport has implemented the new regulation.

However , it is expected that only 20% of taxis will be using the receipts by January after the Christmas period.

Seamas Brennan said that some taxis are already using the new system.

Customers can now expect to receive a print out of what exactly they are being charged, where they have come from, where they are going to, the distance travelled and also the time it took.

The move comes after many customers have been complaining that taxi drivers have been taking advantage of fares.
