Drug abuse is on the increase in Ireland according to official figures, which show that more and more young people are using drugs.

They also show that drug abuse is linked more and more with social exclusion and poverty.

James Byrne, former drug abuser, called for support groups and schools to seek help from ex drug users.

He believes a system where “myself and other addicts are brought in to do support groups for kids and families that have teenagers using drugs” would be the best preventative measure against drug abuse.

He also said that prisons should seek help from addicts as many prisoners experience the first stages of detox in prison.
